The Situation

What if there was a way to re-sell your sports bets, similar to the way you might sell your pre-purchased tickets to a concert or sporting event? That was WagerWire’s big idea. The challenge was it had never been done before. So where does a start-up with a big, new idea even begin? With their game-changing idea sketched out, WagerWire aimed to establish itself in the dynamic sports betting industry by creating, the first-ever, fully integrated secondary marketplace for consumers to buy and sell sports bets. Faced with the challenge of integrating its proprietary marketplace technology into diverse sportsbook apps, WagerWire recognized the need for a certification that could vouch for the robustness of their software.

The Challenge

WagerWire faced a unique challenge in their B2B implementation – the need to adapt to the specificities of diverse gaming operators’ platforms. Unlike a one-size-fits-all approach, their secondary market had to seamlessly integrate into various platforms, ranging from parimutuel betting to more traditional online sports betting systems that could have vastly different rules and intricacies. This challenge demanded a high level of adaptability and flexibility. They needed a compliance and testing partner who understood the complexities of different gaming platforms and could ensure that their secondary market innovations seamlessly integrated into each one. Because their objective was to create a completely new secondary market for sports betting, their framework required a much more dynamic approach.

GLI produced a rigorous checklist that allowed WagerWire to evaluate every aspect of their software comprehensively. With a robust framework in place, combined with expert regulatory guidance and insights from GLI, WagerWire was empowered to design their platform with confidence, knowing that it would meet regulatory standards the first time. The successful culmination was the attainment of GLI-33 certification.

The Standard

Part of the GLI Standards Series, “GLI-33 Event Wagering Systems,” is a technical standard produced by GLI to provide independent technical analysis and/or certifications to wagering industry stakeholders wishing to represent compliance for their wagering operations and systems. The technical standard, which has been widely adopted by provincial, state, and tribal regulators, represents the most highly developed set of technical requirements and practices available for sports and event wagering systems.

The Result

GLI’s thorough certification process and swift testing turnaround played a pivotal role in the success of WagerWire’s product launch. WagerWire’s marketplace technology is now live with Red Rock Resorts on Station Casinos’ “STN Play, iCasino”, a significant achievement for a company serving sportsbooks and bettors. The STN Play iCasino, featuring Sports Plus powered by Sparket, offers a diverse range of slots, table games, and sports betting.

The early results are highly promising, with over 20% of betting volume actively traded on the market. This success extends beyond increased sportsbook volume; users engaging with WagerWire spend more time exploring other parts of the app and playing additional iCasino games.

These positive outcomes underscore the impact of WagerWire’s marketplace functionality on user engagement and overall sportsbook activity. It also highlights the effectiveness of GLI’s certification, compliance, and consultation in not only ensuring technical robustness but also contributing to partnership building in the competitive sports betting landscape.
